Shinerama 2005 - September 15th

The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg will be participating in Shinerama 2005!

Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser involving students at almost 60 university and college campuses across Canada. While Shinerama began in 1964 as a shoe-shining campaign during Orientation week, it has since grown to include a wide variety of shining and non-shining activities under the Shinerama banner.

Our members will be renting and driving vans to provide transportation throughout the day for students to and from the University and their Shinerama fundraising locations.

Special thanks to Kinsmen participants:
Tim McKay, Vince Thiessen, Raj Phangureh

The Winnipeg Block Parents Association has been painting a mural on the side of their building over the summer, but due to a severe lack of volunteer manpower, have been unable to complete it thus far.

A few members of the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg went out to help with the painting of the mural today, and will also be getting a few more Kinsmen members out to help finish the mural next week on Sunday, September 18th in the early afternoon.

The Block Parents building also doubles as a recreation centre for the youth in the area of Osborne and Gertrude. There is an outdoor swimming pool, as well as a play area and rec rooms inside the building. The mural is a beautiful and worthwhile effort to contribute towards.

If you are interested in helping out with this mural, don't hesitate to call the Block Parents Association, or volunteer at our next General Meeting.

Special thanks to Kinsmen participants:
Tim McKay, Raj Phangureh

CAMBRIDGE, Ont., SEPTEMBER 7, 2005 - Kin Canada is gearing up efforts to aid victims of the August 29th hurricane that devastated the American Gulf Coast regions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, including the historic city of New Orleans.

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in North America. The impact of the storm, combined with the collapse of the levee system in New Orleans, resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, countless wounded, and the displacement of more than one million people.

“When a disaster of this magnitude strikes our neighbours, our responsibility to serve the community’s greatest needs extends beyond Canadian borders,” said Ric McDonald, Kin Canada Executive Director. "For that reason, I call upon our thousands of members across Canada to contribute what they can in aid of the stricken areas."

As with the January tsunami relief campaign, in which $50,000 was collected in only a few days, it is anticipated that Kinsmen and Kinettes from coast to coast will again rise to the challenge. The Kinsmen Club of Miramichi has already donated $1000 and is challenging other clubs to match or exceed that contribution.

Kin Canada is pledging to redirect all monies collected during the month of September to the Canadian Red Cross Hurricane Katrina fund. Donations to the relief fund from members, alumni and the general public will be accepted until September 30, 2005. Cheques may be made out to the National Disaster Fund, indicating Hurricane Katrina relief on the memo line. VISA and MasterCard are also being accepted by calling (800) 742- 5546 ext. 206.
